POSITION PURPOSE

Under limited supervision, provides physician-directed therapy, diagnostic evaluation and care of clients with deficiencies and abnormalities associated with the cardiopulmonary system, as set forth by the American Association for Respiratory Care.  Is accountable for assigned caseload.  Serves as an advocate for clients/families.  Adheres to the principles of Service Excellence Guiding Behaviors and the philosophy and mission of Mercy in all aspects of job performance.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:

1.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service/care appropriate to the age of the patients served, in accordance with Mercy standards.

Utilizing respiratory standards, efficiently identifies actual and potential problems and develops/carries out the plan of care specific to the age of the client.

3.

Initiates and revises as necessary the plan of care which meets the home care standards.

4.

Promotes and maintains a safe and calm environment for clients by ensuring appropriate supplies, equipment, and necessary services.

5.

Implements respiratory interventions and adapts care based on changes in client condition, consultation with other professionals and client/family needs.

6.

Initiates appropriate client/family education following assessment of learning and discharge needs.

7.

Documents all client care related activities accurately, legibly, and in compliance with home care policies.

8.

Makes clinical decisions independently based on standards of care.

9.

Administers respiratory medications and treatments/procedures in accordance to the plan of care.

10.

Utilizes internal and community resources in planning care and initiating referrals.

11.

Appropriately delegates tasks/procedures to other team members who are qualified to perform and supervises those to whom respiratory interventions are delegated.

12.

Maintains expected productivity levels.

13.

Uses effective communication principles to coordinate care with other health care providers, i.e. physicians, primary nurse, lab, etc.

14.

Recognizes and communicates issues/ occurrences utilizing established lines of authority, and assists in identifying ways to resolve variances or unacceptable outcomes.

15.

Actively participates in department meeting, committees, conferences, and inservices.

16.

Assists with the orientation of new staff members and the oversight of students performing clinical rotations.

17.

Is knowledgeable of and actively participates in improving patient safety and reducing risk to patients. Complies with Safety and Infection Control Policies and Procedures.

18.

Driving is an essential job function.  If a person loses his/her license he/she will not be able to execute their required job functions.

19.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a respiratory therapy program from an accredited school required.  Requires registry/certification through the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC). A minimum of one year of professional respiratory therapy experience required.  Community health experience preferred. Maintains current CPR status. Is able to communicate effectively with all members of the health care team. Maintains a current motor vehicle driving license and auto insurance.  Has available vehicle to travel to client residences. Is able to perform a variety of duties characterized by frequent change.  Required to travel within the Siouxland region in order to perform job duties and responsibilities as assigned.  A valid drivers license and proof of insurance must be submitted by the employee to their manager and will be maintained throughout employment. Must have a general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.) Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment. Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Mercy and Trinity Health.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Must successfully pass employment physical examination and must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives.  Must possess the ability to comply with Mercy and Trinity Health policies and procedures. This job is categorized as ""Medium Work"".  Has the physical stamina to meet the requirements of this job.   Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and /or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly. Must be able to handle stress effectively. Must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to environmental elements, internal and external, which may affect the work place, such as infectious disease, chemical and/or chemical fumes, dust, noise, physical injury from an out of control patient, and adverse effects of inclement weather which may occur.
