Integrated Pharmacy Technician, Specialty Pharmacy

POSITION PURPOSE- located in Fort Wayne, Indiana

The Integrated Pharmacy Technician is an integrated role within physician practices positioned to assist the Specialty Pharmacy and Physician Practice with patients receiving complex regimens or biological therapies.  In collaboration with Physician Practice, the Integrated Pharmacy Technician is responsible for activities involving access to specialty pharmacy medications which include the verification of pharmacy benefits, assistance with reimbursement issues, enrollment for financial assistance programs, and continuous follow-up to ensure patients receive specialty medication as prescribed. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions. As a member of the specialty pharmacy team, works seamlessly alongside medical office staff to serve patients both face-to-face and over the phone. Works closely with the specialty pharmacy centralized and decentralized staff and provider to prepare and obtain insurance prior authorizations for specialty medications. Pursues appeals for insurance denials when needed. Maintains continuous communication with specialty pharmacy to update status of medication order.  Performs all documentation needed and follow-up on problems or issues needing to be resolved. Assists patients with enrollment in financial assistance programs including third party, manufacturer and locally funded plans. Follows up with funding programs to confirm patient eligibility and gather all required reporting and documentation. Contacts patient, pharmacist and provider regarding status of financial assistance applications and funding available. Communicates effectively with insurance companies and internal and external health care providers. Screens, identifies and resolves clinical or processing issues related to specialty medications. Provides telephone support to patients receiving specialty medications.  Documents all patient interactions. Gathers relevant patient-specific information and transmits to specialty pharmacy as directed by the pharmacist. Participates in quality improvement and quality assurance programs to monitor performance of services. Assists off-campus providers and pharmacists with processing and access to specialty medications, including prior authorizations, denial appeals, financial assistance and communication with specialty pharmacy. Other duties as needed and assigned by the manager. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Degree or equivalent G.E.D required; Associate degree in healthcare or related field is preferred. Experience with adjudicating prescription drugs, corresponding with insurance companies and processing payments, strongly preferred. At least three (3) experience working as a pharmacy technician in a specialty pharmacy, home infusion pharmacy, hospital pharmacy or retail pharmacy preferred. Familiarity with specialty pharmacy products and operations preferred. Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) in the required state(s). Knowledge of Specialty medications is preferred. Knowledge of home infusion, mail order pharmacy or general pharmacy operations is preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other graphics or presentation software. Knowledge of Epic, specialty pharmacy software, and pharmacy prescription adjudication systems preferred. Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment. Must possess a personal presence characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Trinity Health

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to set and organize own work priorities, and adapt to them as they change frequently.  Must be able to work concurrently on a variety of tasks/projects in an environment that may be stressful with individuals having diverse personalities and work styles.  Must possess the ability to comply with Trinity Health policies and procedures. Frequent immobility and/or sitting required for extended periods of time. Some bending and stooping required.  Requires manual dexterity to operate keyboard, calculator, photocopy machine, and other office equipment. Requires eyesight correctable to 20/20 to read reports and computer terminals.  Requires hearing within normal range for telephone use. Work in a fast-paced production environment. Normal office environment and/or standing for prolong periods of time...  Occasional high stress work.
