Infection Preventionist

Job Summary:

Infection preventionists at SJH are experts on practical methods of preventing and controlling the spread of infectious diseases in the acute hospital setting. Their work also helps reduce the risk of contagious diseases being carried out into the community. Infection control practices include surveillance, investigation of cases and outbreaks, training of staff members, the development and enforcement of infection control policies, and evaluation of the effectiveness of infection control efforts. If an outbreak occurs, infection preventionists track down the source and implement strategies to control the problem. They must be alert to any unusual illness that could signal an outbreak, a new type of infection, or even the first casualty of a bioterrorism attack. They collect and analyze data, observe staff members' practices, participate in patient rounds, participate on committees, attend meetings, and design and lead interventions to improve infection control.

Education and Licensure:

Bachelor of Science prepared Registered Nurse with current licensure in the State of New York, or

Bachelors of Science in related field of study (epidemiology or microbiology)

Experience and Skills:

Mandatory qualifications for candidates with a RN clinical background:

-          Minimum of 3-5 years in RN clinical role.

-          Bachelor's degree in nursing.

-          Basic statistical analysis skills – Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products

-         Excellent communication skills – experience working with diverse groups with evidence of fostering collaboration and collegiality.

Preferred but not mandatory qualifications:

-          At least two years of hospital-based infection control experience.

-          Certification in Infection Control (CIC) (must be achieved within 3-5 years of practice).

-          Basic training in infection control surveillance, experience submitting results of epidemiologic investigations to reporting agencies, and experience submitting reportable infections to reporting agencies. (ie. NYSDOH, CMS, CDC).

-          Experience in literature and best practice reviews, policy development and education.

Mandatory qualifications for candidates with a non-clinical background (Microbiologist, Epidemiologist):

-          Bachelors of Science in related field of study (epidemiology, microbiology,

-          Applicable 3-5 years of experience in hospital-based Infection Control including basic training in infection control surveillance, experience submitting results of epidemiologic investigations to reporting agencies, and experience submitting reportable infections to reporting agencies.

-          Basic statistical analysis skills – Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products

Physical Requirement and Demands:

Walking, standing, sitting and computer work.

Infection preventionists at St Joseph's Health, under the direction of the Manager of Infection Prevention and Control and in collaboration with the Hospital Epidemiologist; plans, organizes, leads and controls activities related to network infection control.
