Position Summary:

Responsible for department quality control program. Assists the Radiation Safety Officer with programs required by state, federal, and NRC regulations. Responsible for performing dose-rate calculations for treatment applications as well as all aspects of radiation safety including monitoring and testing radiation generating equipment, and disposing of hazardous radioactive waste in accordance with state and federal regulations. Calibrates radiation-generating equipment. The Radiation Oncology Medical Physicist is recognized by the Radiation Safety Committee as the institutional expert in all matters pertaining to teletherapy and Brach therapy radiation safety and regulatory compliance.

What a Medical Physicist will do:

Reviews patient’s charts to ensure variables involved in planning patient’s radiation therapy have been properly integrated into a workable routine by Radiation Therapy Technologists.
Calibrates all radiation oncology equipment to comply with standards of good practice and applicable state and federal regulations.
Trains in the proper operation of physics equipment, in the use of quality assurance equipment to perform routine tests of therapy treatment machines and simulators and in Brach therapy source preparation, surveying, simulation, safety requirements and computer isodose generation.
Maintains and performs minor repairs on linear accelerators, simulator, treatment planning computer system and Welhoffer beam calibration system.
Provides expertise in the areas of, external beam radiation physics, Brach therapy physics, Simulation, Stereo tactic Radio surgery, and External beam radiation dosimetry.

What Medical Physicist will need:

Certification preferred as a Medical Physicist.
Certification by the American Board of Radiology or American Board of Medical Physics.
Experience in Brach therapy, LDR, HDR, and prostate seed implants.
Experience working with 3-D Treatment Planning Systems. Demonstrated knowledge of and compliance with standards set forth by JCAHO, IDH, and the NRC. Computer literacy. Experience and willingness to perform as "hands-on" medical physicist with some patient contacted responsibilities.
The ability to develop and write instructional/training materials, prepare detailed assessments of patient referrals, conduct individual or group psychotherapy sessions, or perform other duties requiring a comparable level of communication skill.
